Written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, USA, 2013
Grace (Brie Larson) is a social worker at a residential treatment facility for troubled teenagers. She is liked by both staff and residents, in all likelihood because she herself had a tough time growing up and can relate to young people’s lives better than most. But this may have its risky sides as well. When the young Jayden (Kaitlyn Dever) arrives, Grace realizes that they have many common reference points, which open up wounds that she thought had healed. At the same time, she gets an unexpected surprise that is going to change her life, and nothing is the same as before.
A united corps of film critics around the world absolutely love Short Term 12. Both the film itself and Brie Larson as the main character Grace have received more than a dozen national and international awards in 2013 and 2014, including at festivals in Locarno, Athens and Santa Barbara and at the Independent Spirit Awards.
