Directed by Terry McMahon, Ireland, 2014
Patrick is a warm, open, twenty-six year old man with what seem to be mental health issues. Pills and his mother’s protection are seen by everyone as the sole things helping him from being a threat to himself and others. Until he falls in love with Karen, who has another opinion. When Patrick and Karen meet she is about to take her own life and she has no idea that the intimacy she shares with him is going to re-awaken her will to live. Patrick’s obsessive mother Maura doesn’t realize her own misguided love may be more dangerous than hate. This is a provocative and heartbreaking story about love and intimacy, abuse from a parent and from society and about a repressive medical model.
